Ear Hygiene 101

Big things come from small packages. This saying is true when it comes to the topic of ears. The ears are small compared to other parts of the body but its function is very important to the overall well being of a person. Losing the ears may not be a matter of life or death but it can ultimately change the lifestyle of a person. In this note, proper ear hygiene should not be neglected.

To start off, you have to be familiar with the parts of the ear so you know which ones to clean and how gentle you should be. The outer ear is divided into two parts. The first one is pinna and the second one is the auditory canal. For the middle ear, there is the ear drum and the ossicles, which is the smallest bone of the entire human body. Lastly, the inner ear is composed of the cochlea, vestibules and the semi-circular canals.

When it comes to ear cleaning or ear hygiene, there are right tools to do the job. For the outer ear, you can use a washcloth or a tissue. It is best to dampen the washcloth or tissue before gently rubbing it on the outer ear. Just dry off the ear after you clean it. Use a soft cotton buds to clean the middle ear. Be careful when doing so as not to damage the ear canal.

People who listen to loud music all the time and those exposed to loud sounds at work are very prone in having ear problems. To avoid having ear damage or infection, wear ear buds if you have to listen or be exposed to noise. Protection is also important when doing activities that can get very physical. When playing football or riding a motorbike, always wear a helmet to shield the ear and the skull as well.

If you do not take care of your ears, medical complications and infections will soon occur. One of the most common ear infections is otitis. Otitis is a disorder that causes inflammation of the ears. Otitis externa is one class of this disorder that causes pain every time the ear is pulled or even just touched. This is also commonly known as the swimmer’s ear.

When the ear is clogged with fluid inside, otitis media occurs. Otitis externa, on the other hand, will result to problems in hearing and balance. Vertigo is a symptom of having otitis externa. This is caused by too much smoking, disease or even improper cleaning of the ears. It is important to include ear hygiene in the day to day habit of a person to prevent major ear problems in the future.
